Dhaka, Jan 03 (V7N) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman has clarified in his nomination affidavit for the 13th National Parliamentary Election that he has never held dual citizenship, ending long-standing speculation regarding his alleged British nationality. Rahman, who has lived abroad for 17 years, submitted the affidavit as a candidate for the Dhaka-17 constituency, covering Gulshan, Banani, Cantonment, and Baridhara areas. He also declared that he owns no immovable or movable property overseas.

According to the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, although 77 cases were filed against Rahman in the past, none are currently active. He stated, “To my knowledge, the details of all cases filed against me are listed in Schedule 3(g). I am not aware of any ongoing case against me beyond these.”

The affidavit and tax returns indicate that Tarique Rahman’s annual income is Tk 676,353, primarily from shares, bonds, savings certificates, and bank deposits. His total declared assets amount to Tk 19,680,185, with Tk 1,101,453 paid in income tax. He does not own any residential, commercial, or apartment property. Cash holdings total Tk 3,158,428, and fixed deposits and other bank investments amount to Tk 9,024,307. Investments in listed and unlisted company shares are valued at Tk 6,850,000. Jewelry is valued at Tk 2,950, and household furniture at Tk 179,500. He owns no firearms.

Rahman possesses no agricultural land but holds 2.1 acres and 1.4 percent non-agricultural land, valued at Tk 345,000 at acquisition. He also has a building on 2.9 percent of land received as a gift, with its value undisclosed. Neither he nor his dependents have any loans.

His wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, has cash holdings of Tk 6,654,747 and bank FDRs and savings deposits worth Tk 3,515,260. Her total assets amount to Tk 10,530,191, with annual income of Tk 3,560,925 and Tk 557,713 paid in income tax. Jointly, the couple owns 111.25 percent of land and an 800-square-foot two-story building.

In the affidavit, Tarique Rahman lists his profession as “politics,” holds higher secondary education, and is slightly over 57 years old. His current residence is Gulshan Avenue, Dhaka North City Corporation.

The election schedule states that nomination scrutiny will take place from December 30 to January 4, 2026. Appeals can be submitted from January 5 to 9, with resolution between January 10 and 18. The deadline for withdrawal is January 20, and symbols will be allotted on January 21, with campaigning continuing until February 10, 7:30 a.m. Voting is scheduled for February 12.
