Dhaka, May 06 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed hope that the return of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will help restore democracy in the country.

Speaking to reporters before entering Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday morning, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Khaleda Zia has been a long-time victim of fascism. After being released from prison, she went abroad for treatment. After four months of medical care, she is finally returning home today. This is a joyous day for us and for the nation.”

He added that Khaleda Zia’s presence at this critical political juncture holds great significance. “Her return will ease our path to democracy and guide the country towards a just and inclusive direction,” he said.

The 79-year-old former Prime Minister, who has been suffering from multiple health conditions including liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, heart issues, diabetes, and arthritis, traveled to London on January 7 for advanced treatment. Her journey was facilitated by a special air ambulance from the royal fleet of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

During her stay in London, Khaleda Zia received treatment at The London Clinic under the supervision of renowned specialists Professor Patrick Kennedy and Professor Jennifer Cross. After 17 days at the clinic, she moved to her elder son Tarique Rahman's residence on January 25, where she remained until her return to Bangladesh.
