Paris, Aug 15 (V7N)- A French court has overturned a proposed ban on social media use by children under the age of 15, ruling that the measure could infringe on freedom of expression and privacy.
The proposed law was scheduled to take effect on September 1. It would have prevented people under 15 from opening new social media accounts and required existing accounts belonging to under-15s to be closed within four months.
However, France's highest court blocked the legislation, citing concerns over fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and personal privacy.
The decision comes amid growing international debate over restricting children's access to social media because of concerns about online safety and privacy.
Australia previously became the first country to introduce a nationwide ban preventing children under 16 from using major social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok. Several other countries have also considered or introduced similar restrictions.
