Dhaka, Dec 31 (V7N) — The Election Commission has assured that the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will not impact the schedule of the 13th National Parliamentary elections. Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud made the statement on Tuesday at the Agargaon Election Bhaban while addressing journalists.
Commissioner Mashud stated, “The Election Commission’s verification process had not yet been completed. She passed away before that. Therefore, her death will not affect the election schedule, which will remain unchanged.”
He further explained that the party had already submitted substitute candidates for the constituencies where Khaleda Zia had filed nominations. “I believe this matter will be resolved smoothly. There is no need to change the schedule for the constituencies where her nominations were submitted,” he added.
Begum Khaleda Zia had filed nominations for three constituencies — Bogura, Feni, and Dinajpur — to participate in the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections. Her party leaders submitted the nomination papers on her behalf on the last day of filing.
The former Prime Minister passed away on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment, prompting widespread grief across the country. The Election Commission has confirmed that the process for her substitute candidates will proceed without delay, ensuring the elections remain on schedule.
