Jhalokathi, Nov 25 (V7N) – Rajapur Upazila in Jhalokathi district observed its historic Liberation Day on November 23, commemorating the moment in 1971 when the area became the first within Sector 9 of the Barishal region to be freed from Pakistani occupation forces. On this day, the flag of independent Bangladesh was raised in Rajapur for the first time within the sector, following an intense overnight battle between freedom fighters and the Pakistani military.
According to local accounts, freedom fighters began their assault on the Pakistani camp at Rajapur Police Station on the evening of November 22, triggering hours of heavy gunfire. By around 4 a.m. on November 23, the Pakistani forces were compelled to surrender. The liberation of Rajapur marked an end to ongoing atrocities in the area.
The battle claimed the lives of several brave fighters, including Abdur Rahman and Abdur Razzak, while at least 20 others, including Md. Hossain Ali, were severely injured. Earlier, on November 8, freedom fighters Abul Kalam and Babul Hossain of Angaria village were martyred in an encounter with Pakistani forces. Reports indicate that more than 300 freedom fighters took part in the decisive battle, led by Captain Muhammad Shahjahan Omar, one of the key sub-sector commanders of Sector 9. During the fighting, Captain Omar sustained a gunshot wound to his ankle. He was later awarded the Bir Uttam title for his bravery.
In recognition of Rajapur’s historic role, the Freedom Fighters’ Interaction Center was established in the upazila in 1995, and several roads were named after the martyrs to honor their sacrifices.
However, despite the region’s profound historical significance, no official programs or commemorations were organized this year. The memorial site at the police station ghat, designated as a mass killing ground, remains neglected, without maintenance or signage. Freedom fighters and local residents expressed concern that the lack of observance and preservation is depriving the younger generation of learning about Rajapur’s crucial contribution to the Liberation War.
They urged authorities to restore the heritage sites, ensure proper documentation, and revive annual commemorations to keep the legacy alive for future generations.
