Chittagong, Oct 09 (V7N) – The body of Dr. Tofail Ahmed, former professor of Public Administration at the University of Chittagong and a prominent local government expert, has been taken to his ancestral home in Fatehpur, Hathazari.

His body arrived in the village early Thursday morning in a refrigerated vehicle, casting a pall of mourning over the entire area. According to family members, his funeral prayer will be held at the Fatehpur High School grounds at 11 a.m., followed by burial at the family graveyard.

The 71-year-old scholar passed away at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday (October 8) while undergoing treatment for heart disease at a private hospital in Dhaka. He had been admitted on Tuesday, and doctors had planned to place a stent, but he passed away before the procedure could be performed.

Born on March 1, 1954, in Fatehpur, Hathazari, Dr. Tofail earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in politics and administration from the University of Chittagong in 1976 and 1977, respectively.

A respected academic and reformist, Dr. Ahmed was appointed in October 2024 as a member of the Electoral Reform Commission under the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He later served as Chairman of the Local Government Reform Commission, contributing significantly to policy discussions on governance and decentralization in Bangladesh.

His death marks the loss of one of the country’s foremost voices on local governance and electoral reform.
