Sylhet, Sept 24 (V7N) – Sylhet city authorities have launched a strict crackdown on illegal CNG auto-rickshaws and unauthorized stands to tackle severe traffic congestion that has long plagued the city. The one-kilometer stretch from Ambarkhana to Chawkidighi, a key route leading to Osmani International Airport, has been particularly affected by daily traffic jams caused by haphazardly parked CNG auto-rickshaws.

Currently, the city officially has 19,200 registered CNG auto-rickshaws operating under approval from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). However, estimates indicate that between 50,000 and 60,000 vehicles actually circulate, with a significant number operating illegally under the control of syndicates involving workers and local police. These unauthorized vehicles not only block streets but are linked to increasing road accidents and crime.

Sylhet District Commissioner Sarwar Alam has issued a 15-day ultimatum for operators of illegal CNG auto-rickshaws to remove unlicensed vehicles from city roads. “From September 22 onward, no unauthorized CNGs or stands will be allowed in Sylhet. Vehicles not moved within the timeframe will face legal action, including fines, imprisonment, or impoundment. Designated parking areas will be provided to ensure organized traffic flow,” he said.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury also confirmed that the city police will actively enforce the ban, coordinating with transport owners and worker leaders to ensure compliance. Authorities noted that unlicensed auto-rickshaws often operate under fake registration documents and tokens, making it difficult for traffic police to take action. These illegal practices have caused harassment for legitimate CNG operators, who sometimes face extortion or obstruction.

Transport associations, including the Sylhet District CNG Auto-Rickshaw, Auto-Tempo, and Taxi Owners Association, have welcomed the crackdown, highlighting that unregulated vehicles are a major contributor to traffic congestion and rising petty crimes. Authorities are also evaluating designated parking locations and management strategies to prevent future obstructions.

Officials stressed that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to restore orderly urban mobility, improve safety, and support lawful operators. The campaign marks one of the most comprehensive enforcement measures against illegal CNG auto-rickshaws in Sylhet’s history.
