Mongla, May 10, (V7N)– State Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, announced that the Thakurani Canal in Mongla will be rescued from encroachment before the upcoming monsoon to reduce mosquito infestation and waterlogging.
Speaking as chief guest at a discussion meeting titled “What to do to resolve the complications related to the Mongla River crossing” at the Mongla Port Authority conference room on Sunday afternoon, the minister said: “Those who have established on the canal can be very powerful. Therefore, we have to work unswervingly in the field of state property.”
He added that until a suspension bridge is built over the Mongla River, two permanent ghats and full-time ferry services will be launched to ensure smooth river crossings for people of all professions. Departmental officials have been instructed to take visible and effective measures within the next week.
The meeting was chaired by Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten, with Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdullah Harun and Mongla Port Authority Acting Chairman Commodore Md. Shafiqul Islam Sarkar present as special guests.
