Despite assertions by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) linking the armed separatist group Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) to recent bank robberies and an abduction in Bandarban, no specific KNF members or leaders have been named in the seven cases filed thus far.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal confirmed KNF involvement in the incidents during a press briefing at the Secretariat on Wednesday. However, the cases filed in Ruma and Thanchi accused over 180 unidentified individuals in connection with the crimes.
On April 5, four cases were lodged at Ruma police station against 130-150 unnamed members of an armed group, and three more cases were filed at Thanchi police station against 25-30 individuals allegedly involved in robbery, under various legal provisions including the Special Powers Act 1974 and the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.
According to Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim Uddin of Thanchi police station, preparations for filing another case are currently underway.
Recent incidents in Bandarban include an attack on a checkpost in Alikadam upazila on Friday, as well as reported robberies, abductions, and clashes involving KNF members and law enforcement in Ruma and Thanchi upazilas. The KNF allegedly attempted to loot Tk1.5 crore from the vault of Sonali Bank's Ruma upazila branch manager on Tuesday, leading to the manager's abduction. Subsequently, robberies were carried out at Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila on Wednesday.
