Tehran, July 29 (V7N)- Iran has rejected Oman's proposal to share control of the shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, while offering an alternative plan that would place part of Oman's section of the waterway under Iranian control.
According to Al Jazeera, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Oman had proposed dividing the main shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz equally between the two countries, with 50 percent running through Iranian territorial waters and the remaining 50 percent through Omani waters.
Gharibabadi said Iran did not accept the proposal. Instead, Tehran proposed that while part of the transit route would remain within Iranian territorial waters, the section passing through Omani waters should also be placed under Iranian control.
He said Iran had presented the proposal to Oman and warned that if Muscat does not accept it, the Strait of Hormuz would be closed.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes and a critical passage for global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway could have significant implications for international energy markets and regional security.
