Washington, July 29 (V7N)- The United States and Saudi Arabia have carried out joint military strikes against Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The Times of Israel reported that CENTCOM, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the targeted operation was conducted on Tuesday against armed groups allegedly supported by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to CENTCOM, the IRGC had directed the groups to launch attacks on US military personnel and Saudi energy facilities. The joint operation was aimed at disrupting those threats and degrading the groups' operational capabilities.
CENTCOM also warned that the IRGC and its affiliated armed groups must cease attacks against US forces and regional partners. The command said the United States is prepared to take further military action if such attacks continue.
The US military further stated that previous attacks targeting American forces had failed to achieve their objectives.
There has been no immediate response from Iranian authorities or the armed groups mentioned in the CENTCOM statement.
