Dhaka, Mar 11 (V7N) – Maulana Mamunul Haque, Amir of the Khilafat Majlis and candidate of an 11-party alliance, has filed a case in the High Court alleging vote rigging in the 13th National Parliament election. Four other BNP candidates have also submitted separate election petitions citing similar allegations.
The High Court Election Tribunal, headed by Justice Md. Zakir Hossain, is scheduled to hear these petitions on Wednesday (March 11).
The candidates filing petitions include:
-
Maulana Mamunul Haque – Khilafat Majlis, 11-party alliance
-
Faruk Alam Sarkar – Gaibandha-5, BNP
-
Nabi Ullah Nabi – Dhaka-5, BNP
-
Hasan Zafir Tuhin – Pabna-3, BNP
-
Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi – Kushtia-4, BNP
Earlier, petitions from 14 BNP candidates, 8 candidates from 11-party alliances, and 1 independent candidate were heard over alleged irregularities in various constituencies. Following those petitions, the High Court ordered ballot papers and result sheets from the concerned constituencies to be placed under its custody.
Under Section 49 of the Representation of the People Ordinance (RPO), any candidate can file an election petition in the High Court against irregularities or rigging. The single bench of Justice Md. Zakir Hossain has been hearing these petitions regularly.
The tribunal will now verify the veracity of the allegations and may issue further decisions regarding the official results of the affected constituencies.
