Dhaka, Dec 11 (V7N) — The Supreme Court Secretariat has been officially inaugurated to strengthen the independence of the judiciary. Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed presided over the inauguration on Thursday afternoon.

Addressing the ceremony, the Chief Justice said the constitutional power now rests with the Supreme Court and urged the next government to ensure the Secretariat’s activities continue uninterrupted.

Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul said the Secretariat would help establish the rule of law, emphasizing that no one would be able to use the Law Ministry or judiciary for political purposes.

The Secretariat was created under the Separate Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, enacted on November 30, which formally separated the judiciary from the executive after 25 years. The Secretariat will now handle all administrative and secretarial duties related to the supervision and control of subordinate courts and administrative tribunals.

Initially, formal operations of the Secretariat will begin in two rooms of the Supreme Court Administrative Building-4. The Chief Justice has already formed an eight-member Planning and Development Committee and a Post Creation Committee, and on December 7, a decision was made to appoint 489 officers and employees to carry out the Secretariat’s work.
