DHAKA, Aug 2, (V7N) — Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam today urged all stakeholders to work jointly to ensure safe tourism in Cox's Bazar and across the country in the wake of the recent parasailing accident that killed a tourist.
She also instructed the authorities concerned to take strict action against those responsible and asked Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) officials to work with the Cox's Bazar Beach Management Committee to avert such incidents in the future.
The minister issued the directives at a meeting of the Verification Committee on the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for the proposed "Formation, Development and Management of the Manikganj District Tourism Circuit" held at Bangladesh Tourism Bhaban in Agargaon today.
At the beginning of the meeting, she expressed deep shock over the tourist's death in the parasailing accident at Cox's Bazar beach and emphasised strengthening safety measures at all tourist spots nationwide.
The meeting laid special focus on promoting river-based tourism under the proposed Manikganj circuit. It also discussed in detail the setting up of a Tourist Information and Service Centre, a Handicraft Centre and a Lifeguard Service Centre.
Afroza Khanam directed officials to conserve, restore and develop Baliati Palace, Dhamrai Folk Art Centre and other heritage sites to make them more appealing to visitors.
She said each tourism destination should be developed with a unique theme while ensuring direct benefits for local communities.
