PABNA, Aug 03 (V7N) — A project to prevent erosion along the Padma River in Pabna has begun with the placement of geo-bags at vulnerable riverbank areas, aiming to protect local communities, agricultural land and public infrastructure from further damage.
Pabna-2 constituency lawmaker A.K.M. Selim Reza Habib inaugurated the geo-bag placement work on Sunday afternoon at the Majpara Eidgah Field area under Sujanagar upazila.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sujanagar and Bera upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs), the executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), local representatives and community leaders.
The Padma River, one of Bangladesh's major rivers, has long been associated with seasonal erosion, particularly during the monsoon when increased water flow and strong currents weaken riverbanks. The erosion has threatened homes, farmland, roads and other local infrastructure in several riverside areas of Pabna.
Residents of erosion-prone areas said the riverbank protection initiative has brought relief and hope among communities that have faced repeated losses due to riverbank collapse.
Officials said geo-bag technology is being used as a short-term protective measure to stabilise vulnerable sections of the riverbank and reduce the impact of erosion. The Bangladesh Water Development Board is implementing various river management projects across the country to address erosion risks.
Local people urged authorities to continue long-term river protection measures, including sustainable embankment development and regular monitoring, to prevent future damage caused by the Padma River's changing course.
