Pabna, July 24 (V7N) — A court in Pabna has sentenced an assistant sub-food inspector, his wife, and his father to imprisonment for corruption and acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.
 
The Special District and Sessions Judge Court of Pabna on Thursday sentenced Monirul Islam, Assistant Sub-Food Inspector at the Kamarkhand Food Controller’s Office in Sirajganj, to a total of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in two separate cases. His wife Dolly Begum and father Shahidul Islam Pramanik were each sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment.
 
The court also imposed a total fine of Tk 1.24 crore and ordered the confiscation of the accused persons’ movable and immovable properties in favour of the state.
 
Judge Abu Saleh Md. Salahuddin Khan delivered the verdict after completing the hearing of two separate cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) at the Special District and Sessions Judge Court in Pabna on Thursday afternoon.
 
ACC Pabna Integrated District Office Deputy Director Shahidul Alam Sarker, who filed the cases, confirmed the verdict.
 
The convicted individuals are Monirul Islam, a resident of Char Damdama area under Ullapara Upazila of Sirajganj, his father Shahidul Islam Pramanik, and his wife Dolly Begum. They were reportedly absconding after the verdict was announced.
 
According to the case documents, Monirul Islam allegedly used illegally acquired money to build a house in his father’s name, while his wife deposited Tk 60 lakh in a fixed deposit account at a bank.
 
Following allegations of corruption and illegal wealth accumulation, the ACC conducted an investigation and filed two separate cases in 2023. The cases were filed by ACC Pabna Deputy Director Shahidul Alam Sarker.
 
In the verdict, the court sentenced Monirul Islam to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in each of the two cases, along with fines of Tk 54.30 lakh and Tk 60.10 lakh, respectively.
 
The court also sentenced his father Shahidul Islam Pramanik and wife Dolly Begum to five years’ rigorous imprisonment each and fined each of them Tk 5 lakh.
 
The court further ordered the seizure of the accused persons’ properties linked to the cases.
 
Public Prosecutor Advocate Moloy Kumar Das represented the state, while Advocate Rezaul Karim Palash represented the accused.
