Dhaka, Nov 17 (V7N) – The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. The court also ordered the confiscation of all their assets.

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was a witness in the case, received a five-year prison sentence.

The tribunal ruled that all five charges of crimes against humanity against the accused have been proven. The charges include:

  1. Making provocative statements.

  2. Ordering the use of lethal weapons to eliminate protesters.

  3. Shooting and killing Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed in Rangpur.

  4. Shooting and killing six protesters in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area.

  5. Burning six people to death in Ashulia.

Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Abu Sayeed, including incitement and ordering the use of deadly weapons, drones, and helicopters. However, she was sentenced to death for the six murders in Chankharpul and the burning of six bodies in Ashulia. Asaduzzaman Khan received the death penalty for the same charges.

Regarding Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the tribunal noted that while the crimes he committed were severe, he had helped make the case meaningful by fully disclosing the details of the incidents, and therefore, he received a five-year prison sentence.

Among the three, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was in custody, while Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are absconding. Sheikh Hasina reportedly fled to India by helicopter on August 5, 2024, and has been staying in Delhi since then.
