Dhaka, Nov 12 (V7N) — Following the High Court’s decision to reinstate four parliamentary constituencies in Bagerhat, representatives of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin on Tuesday to discuss the ruling and urge the Election Commission (EC) to honor the court’s verdict.

During the meeting, the opposition leaders presented their demands and emphasized that the EC should refrain from taking any steps that could cause further political tension in the area.

Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters that the commission had not yet received the certified copy of the judgment. He stated that once the court’s observations are reviewed, the EC will decide whether to appeal or comply with the verdict. He also mentioned that around 30 boundary-related cases remain pending in different courts, with new notices arriving regularly.

Earlier, the EC’s final gazette had reduced Bagerhat’s constituencies from four to three and Gazipur’s from six to five. However, in response to separate writ petitions, the High Court on Monday directed the EC to restore the previous seat configurations in both districts.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, BNP Executive Committee member Sheikh Wadizzuman Dipu said the EC’s earlier decision on Bagerhat’s boundaries had been declared invalid by the nation’s highest court. He urged the commission to show full respect for the rule of law.

He added that the EC should ensure that no further pressure is created on the people of the affected regions.

Also present at the meeting were BNP Bagerhat District Committee Advisor and senior Jute Mills leader Kazi Moniruzzaman Monir, as well as Jamaat representative Manjurul Islam Rahat, among others.
