Jhalokathi, June 29 (V7N) — The eastern Guatna area of Jhalokathi Sadar, once renowned for the intricate nests of Weaver birds (Babui Pakhi), has lost its most prominent bird habitat after a large palm tree was illegally cut down. The incident occurred on Friday (June 27) when Mizanur Rahman, a timber trader, felled the tree adjacent to land owned by Mobarak Ali Fakir, despite local objections.
This single act led to the destruction of over 100 weaver bird eggs and more than 50 chicks, effectively wiping out the only known safe breeding site for the birds in the area.
In response, the Jhalokathi Forest Department filed a lawsuit in court on Sunday (June 29) under the Environmental Protection Act. A separate case for illegal tree felling was also lodged with Jhalokathi Sadar Police Station.
According to locals, Mobarak Ali sold the tree to Mizanur Rahman, who then proceeded to cut it down, ignoring pleas from residents who tried to stop him.
Officer-in-Charge of Jhalokathi Sadar Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, confirmed the filing of a case regarding the tree cutting. The Forest Department also filed a formal legal complaint for destruction of wildlife habitat.
Jhalokathi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Farhana Yasmin stated, “We are taking the matter seriously. The act clearly violates environmental laws, and legal action against those involved is already underway.”
Mohammad Kabir Hossain Patwari, Divisional Forest Officer of Barishal, added, “After receiving the report, we immediately visited the site and verified the destruction. Two individuals have been identified, and we have filed a case under the Environmental Protection Act.”
As of Sunday, both Mizanur Rahman and Mobarak Ali have gone into hiding, and attempts to reach them for comment have been unsuccessful.
