Dhaka, July 2 (V7N) – A local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader was killed and another injured in a sharp-weapon attack in Dhaka's Adabor area on Wednesday night following a dispute that police said stemmed from a FIFA World Cup football match.

The deceased was identified as Badsha Mia, general secretary of the BNP's Nobodoy Housing Unit. Saddam Hossain, 35, president of the same unit, was injured in the attack and is receiving treatment at hospital.

According to police, the dispute began on Monday night after an altercation between two groups over the Brazil-Japan World Cup match in Nobodoy Housing.

One group was led by Saddam Hossain and Badsha Mia, while the opposing group included local residents Ripon and Parvez.

On Wednesday evening, both sides attended a community mediation meeting in an attempt to resolve the dispute. However, no agreement was reached.

Police said that at around 8:00 p.m., as Saddam and Badsha were leaving the meeting, they were attacked by a group of assailants armed with sharp weapons. Both sustained multiple injuries and were initially taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

As Badsha's condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Jewel Rana of the Mohammadpur Zone said the violence was linked to the earlier clash over the football match. He added that efforts were underway to arrest those responsible.

Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam confirmed Badsha Mia's death and said legal proceedings had been initiated. He also confirmed that Saddam Hossain remains hospitalised.
