Ukhiya, Aug 16 (V7N) — Police have detained a suspected former ‘gun group commander’ of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) during an operation at a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
The detainee was identified as Nur Ahmed, whom police described as a former ‘gun group commander’ and an active member of ARSA.
The operation was conducted by members of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at Block B/13 of Camp-8 East on Saturday afternoon.
According to the 8th APBn, two Rohingya men were detained during the operation. However, a group of five to six people allegedly intervened and took away one of the detainees, identified as Abul Osman, from police custody. Nur Ahmed was detained at the scene.
Police alleged that Nur Ahmed was involved in several criminal activities, including the killing of an intelligence agency official along the border, a clash with APBn personnel in the Camp-8 area, and a killing and robbery involving around Tk 40 lakh at a registered Rohingya camp. Police also alleged that he had links to a major yaba consignment.
The 8th APBn also identified Nurul Amin, Razi Kullah, Hairul Bashar, Nachar and Md Nur as individuals allegedly involved in taking Abul Osman away from police custody. Police said they were accused of obstructing the operation.
Superintendent of Police Md Riaz Uddin Ahmed, commander of the 8th APBn, said operations would continue to maintain law and order in the Rohingya camps.
Legal proceedings against Nur Ahmed are underway, he said.
Police said regular operations and surveillance in the camps would continue, while the allegations against Nur Ahmed would be verified before further legal action is taken.
