Dhaka, Aug 25 (V7N)- The High Court has postponed the date for delivering its verdict on the death reference and appeal of Hitu Sheikh, the main accused in the sensational rape and murder case of eight-year-old Acia of Magura.
The verdict, which was scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday, will now be announced on August 31.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman fixed the new date on Tuesday following a time petition filed by the state.
Earlier, on Monday, the same bench had fixed August 25 for delivering the verdict on the death reference and appeal.
According to the case details, Acia was allegedly assaulted in March 2025 while visiting her sister's in-laws' residence in Nijnanduali village of Magura.
She was initially taken to hospitals in Magura and Faridpur in critical condition. She was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and subsequently to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka, where the eight-year-old died while undergoing treatment on March 13.
Following the incident, Acia's mother filed a case against four people, including Hitu Sheikh. Police later arrested all the accused during separate raids.
On May 17, 2025, Judge M Zahid Hasan of the Magura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced Hitu Sheikh to death. The court acquitted the other three accused.
The High Court is now scheduled to deliver its decision on the death reference and appeal on August 31.
