Dhaka, Oct 11 (V7N)- A high-level delegation led by Masayuki Omoto, president and CEO of Japan's Marubeni Corporation, has expressed interest in investing in several promising sectors of Bangladesh during a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The delegation paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at the Prime Minister's Office in the Secretariat on Sunday. Discussions focused on expanding Japanese investment, strengthening bilateral trade and exploring new areas of economic cooperation.

The two sides discussed potential collaboration in information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, fertilizers and energy.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said his government was working to create a favourable environment for domestic and foreign investment to unlock Bangladesh's economic potential and generate employment. He welcomed Marubeni's interest in investing in the country's IT, fertilizer and energy sectors.

The prime minister also highlighted Marubeni's longstanding business relationship with Bangladesh in jute products, emphasizing the importance of expanding existing cooperation while exploring opportunities in new industries.

The meeting also addressed government plans to strengthen the IT and cybersecurity skills of Bangladeshi engineering graduates. Participants noted that the country's skilled workforce, technological capabilities and competitive services could help position Bangladesh as an international service hub.

Another key topic was a proposal to establish an AI-based data centre in Bangladesh within the next 12 months. The delegation's interest and potential investment in the project were discussed.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of expanding Marubeni's existing investment in Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO).

The meeting expressed optimism that the proposed Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, once implemented, would further strengthen trade and investment ties between the two countries.
