Dhaka, Jul 12 (V7N) — Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Speaker Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, describing his passing as a significant loss to the nation's parliamentary and legal community.

In a condolence message issued by the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat on Sunday, the Speaker prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, a recipient of the Bir Bikram gallantry award, passed away at a hospital in the capital on Sunday at the age of 94 (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji'un).

Born on December 1, 1931, in Nayabari village of Tentulia Upazila in Panchagarh district, Sircar completed his M.A. and LL.B. degrees at the University of Dhaka. In 1961, he travelled to the United Kingdom, where he qualified as a Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln's Inn, London. Upon returning to Bangladesh, he established himself as one of the country's leading constitutional, civil and criminal law practitioners at the Supreme Court.

Barrister Sircar served as the Speaker of the Eighth Jatiya Sangsad from October 28, 2001, to January 25, 2009, and briefly served as the Acting President of Bangladesh in 2002.

Throughout his long political career, he also held several key ministerial positions under the governments of late President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. These included State Minister for Public Works and Urban Development, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, State Minister for Land, Minister for Education, and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

In his message, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed paid tribute to Barrister Sircar's lifelong contributions to parliamentary democracy, the rule of law and public service, saying his legacy would be remembered with respect.
