Dhaka, August 31 (V7N) — Bangladesh's government plans to expand the number of green-certified shipbreaking yards to 100 while ensuring the industry meets international standards and environmental requirements, Commerce and Industries Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said.
He made the remarks at a workshop on the shipbreaking industry on Monday (August 31).
According to the minister, Bangladesh currently has 31 green shipbreaking yards, while another six to seven yards are awaiting licences. The government wants to increase the total number of green yards to 100.
Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said the shipbreaking industry is important not only for employment and business but also as a major source of raw materials for Bangladesh's steel industry.
However, he noted that shipbreaking can release hazardous substances that pose risks to the environment. The government is therefore working to ensure that the industry develops in line with international standards while minimizing environmental damage.
The minister said that if a treatment, storage and disposal facility is established in Chattogram at an estimated cost of around Tk 1,500 crore, it could collect and treat waste generated not only by shipbreaking yards but also by other industries.
He also emphasized the need for adequate financing and technical assistance to help establish and operate green-certified shipbreaking facilities.
