Dhaka, Apr 14 (V7N) – On the first morning of the Bengali New Year, the traditional Barshabaran ceremony at Ramna Batamul carried a powerful message of building a fearless and free society, inspired by the philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore.
Organized by Chhayanaut, this year’s theme reflected Tagore’s vision of a dreamland “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free.”
Chhayanaut President Dr. Sarwar Ali said the world today is gripped by fear and unrest amid ongoing conflicts. Referring to global tensions, he noted that even ancient civilizations are facing severe crises. On the first morning of the New Year, he expressed hope for global peace and a society where people can live without fear.
He emphasized the importance of freedom of expression, stating that journalists should be able to speak freely, artists should perform without fear, and cultural expression should remain unrestricted so that Bengalis can live with dignity and confidence.
Describing Pahela Baishakh as a significant occasion for expressing Bengali culture and national identity, he said the day offers an opportunity to leave behind past sorrows and reflect on the year gone by. He also recalled recent incidents of violence against cultural spaces, including vandalism of musical instruments and educational materials, attacks on cultural institutions, and the humiliation of Baul artists. He further mentioned that memories of the 2001 attack at Ramna still remain vivid.
The program began at 6:15 am with the opening song “Jago Alok-Lagane.” The two-hour program featured a total of 24 performances, including eight group performances and 14 solo songs and recitations.
Around 200 artists, including students, teachers, and senior performers, took part in the event.
The festival, which started in 1967, has been held every year on the first day of Baishakh except during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The celebration was also held virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through a blend of music, poetry, and cultural expression, the Program welcomed the New Year with a renewed call for peace, unity, and a fearless society.
