UN, New York, Sept 11 (V7N) — The United Nations General Assembly has begun its 81st session at a time of mounting global challenges, with member states facing renewed pressure to strengthen international cooperation, restore confidence in multilateral institutions and address conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate change and sustainable development.
The 81st session officially opened on Sept. 8 at United Nations Headquarters in New York, with Bangladesh's H.E. Khalilur Rahman presiding as President of the General Assembly. His election to lead the session marked a significant moment for Bangladesh at the United Nations.
The new session is expected to provide a major diplomatic platform for discussions on international peace and security, economic and social development, climate action, human rights and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The opening of the session comes amid a complex international environment marked by prolonged conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, geopolitical tensions and growing concerns over the ability of multilateral institutions to respond effectively to global crises.
Against this backdrop, the General Assembly is expected to place renewed emphasis on rebuilding trust among nations and strengthening collective action through the United Nations system.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing challenges that no country can resolve alone. The General Assembly remains the UN's principal forum where all 193 member states have an equal voice in global deliberations.
The session will also set the stage for the high-level General Debate later this month, when heads of state and government and other senior representatives are expected to gather in New York to present their countries' priorities and address major international issues.
Among the issues expected to feature prominently are the wars and humanitarian crises affecting millions of people, efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts, climate change and its impacts, poverty and inequality, sustainable development, global health, migration and the protection of human rights.
The 81st session is also particularly significant for Bangladesh, with a Bangladeshi national serving as President of the General Assembly. H.E. Khalilur Rahman was elected by the General Assembly on June 2 to lead the body's 81st session.
As the session progresses, member states will have to navigate differences over some of the world's most pressing political and security issues while seeking areas of common ground.
