Dhaka, Dec 24 (V7N)- The government has reduced the customs duty on imported dates from 25 percent to 15 percent in a bid to ensure adequate supply and keep prices stable ahead of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
The decision was formalized through a government notification issued on Tuesday (December 23). According to the notification, the reduced duty rate will remain effective until March 31, 2026.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the information on Wednesday (December 24), stating that the measure aims to ease import costs and prevent price hikes during periods of increased demand.
In addition, under the latest national budget, amendments were made to the rules governing advance income tax (AIT) at the import stage. As a result, the AIT on imports of all types of fruits, including dates, has been reduced from 10 percent to 5 percent.
Moreover, the 50 percent exemption on advance income tax granted last year for the import of dates and other fruits will continue this year as well, further lowering the cost burden on importers.
Officials believe that these fiscal measures will help stabilize the market, ensure uninterrupted supply of dates during Ramadan, and provide relief to consumers.
