Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N) — 24 Bangladeshis imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates for their participation in the July Uprising will soon be released, Professor Asif Nazrul, Advisor to the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, announced on Friday afternoon.

In a verified Facebook post, Professor Nazrul said, “Alhamdulillah. The efforts of the Expatriates' Welfare Ministry under the leadership of the interim government's Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus have finally seen success.” He extended thanks to officials from the Expatriates’ Welfare Ministry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Bangladesh Embassy in the UAE for their cooperation.

Earlier, in September last year, 188 detainees from the UAE were released following a direct request from the Chief Advisor.

Out of 57 people detained in the first round of protests in the UAE, three had been sentenced to life imprisonment, 53 to 10 years, and one to 11 years. On August 28 last year, the Chief Advisor requested UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to commute their sentences. The UAE government responded positively, leading to the release of the majority of the detainees, who began returning to Bangladesh from the first week of September.

The upcoming release of the remaining 24 detainees marks the final phase of repatriation for those imprisoned in connection with the July Uprising in the UAE.
