Rajshahi, Nov 22 (V7N) — Fisheries Advisor Farida Akhtar has urged fish farmers across the country to prioritize the production of safe and healthy fish, highlighting the need for responsible use of feed and medicines in aquaculture.

She made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while speaking at a conference jointly organized by the Department of Fisheries and the District Commercial Fishermen’s Cooperative Association at the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium of Rajshahi University.

The Advisor said the government is in the process of formulating a comprehensive fish farming policy aimed at strengthening both natural and artificial fish production systems.

Farida Akhtar noted that 40 percent of Bangladesh’s total fish demand is met by fish produced in the Rajshahi region. She said carp fish from this area remains highly popular across the country and is also in demand among expatriate Bengalis worldwide. “For this reason, the government is taking special initiative to export carp fish abroad,” she added.

Emphasizing the need to increase artificial fish farming alongside natural production in canals, rivers, haors, and baors, the Advisor said expansion must be implemented carefully. She urged farmers to remain vigilant so that artificial farming does not adversely affect natural fish resources.

She reiterated that ensuring safe, quality fish production is essential for public health and will remain a priority in the upcoming policy framework.
