Dhaka, Oct 09 (V7N) – Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Professor Dr. Tofail Ahmed, renowned local government expert, researcher, and former member of the Local Government Reform Commission.
In a condolence message, the Chief Advisor said that Professor Tofail Ahmed was one of the foremost pioneers in research on Bangladesh’s local government system. As the head of the Local Government Reform Commission, formed under the interim government in 2024, he worked with deep commitment and presented constructive, realistic proposals that remain highly relevant for local governance today.
“Professor Tofail Ahmed was an accomplished researcher and writer on local government and cooperatives,” said Professor Yunus. “Throughout his life, he was devoted to promoting administrative decentralization, accountable governance, and democratic practices. His 20 books and numerous research articles published in both local and international journals will continue to enrich our understanding for generations to come.”
At the time of his passing, Dr. Tofail Ahmed was serving as a Local Governance Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bangladesh. Remembering him as an honest, wise, and dedicated scholar, the Chief Advisor prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, colleagues, and admirers.
It may be recalled that Professor Dr. Tofail Ahmed, a syndicate member of Chittagong University and retired professor of the Department of Public Administration, passed away at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday (October 8) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. In October 2024, he was appointed as a member of the Electoral Reform Commission under the interim government led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, later assuming the role of Chairman of the Local Government Reform Commission.
