Dhaka, Oct 04 (V7N) – Starting Sunday (October 5), the use of single-use plastic (SUP) will be completely prohibited within the Bangladesh Secretariat. Checks will be conducted at all entry points, and any polythene or SUP items found will be restricted immediately.
According to a press release issued by Dipankar Bor, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the initiative aims to set an example for other institutions in eliminating products that pose serious threats to the environment and public health.
Awareness boards have already been installed at different points in the Secretariat, including entrances, and a monitoring team has been formed to oversee the implementation of the ban. The Cabinet Division has also instructed all ministries to actively support this initiative.
The ministry stated that plastic bottles, cups, plates, and spoons will no longer be allowed in meetings, seminars, or daily use. Instead, the use of jute, cloth, or reusable bags will be encouraged. In addition, paper or eco-friendly food packets will be provided during official events.
To ensure strict enforcement, each ministry will appoint a focal person and form a monitoring committee to supervise the shift toward sustainable alternatives.
The ministry has urged full cooperation from all officials and staff to make the Secretariat completely SUP-free from Sunday (October 5), marking a significant step in Bangladesh’s ongoing fight against plastic pollution.
