Dhaka, Sep 07 (V7N) – Bangladesh’s position in securing trade benefits with different countries remains weak, according to trade experts and policymakers.

Speaking at a seminar on international trade, Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin noted that Bangladesh faces difficulties in negotiating trade concessions, especially regarding a few key export products.

Lutfe Siddiqui, Special Envoy for International Affairs of the Chief Advisor, echoed this view, saying that Bangladesh is “still not in a position to make many demands” in trade talks with other nations. He stressed that compromise will be essential in advancing the country’s trade agenda.

Adding to the discussion, British High Commissioner Sarah Cook emphasized the importance of proper placement of skilled professionals in relevant sectors. “It is dangerous if qualified people leave their jobs on their own,” she warned.

Economist Dr. Abdur Razzak highlighted the looming challenges after Bangladesh’s graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category. “Trade benefits will no longer come automatically; they will have to be earned,” he said. He further cautioned that in the future, it will be difficult to sustain without free trade agreements (FTAs), urging policymakers to start preparations immediately.
