Amravati, Aug 24 (V7N)- Three newborn babies died after a fire broke out at a government hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, India, early Monday.
According to NDTV, the fire erupted on the third floor of the Amravati District Women’s Hospital after a ventilator reportedly exploded. At the time, 39 newborns were admitted to the hospital’s Special Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU).
As the fire spread through the unit, three newborns died from severe burns and smoke inhalation. Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff rushed to the ward and began evacuating the babies.
Six other newborns, who were in critical condition, were transferred to a nearby specialty hospital for further treatment.
Following the incident, authorities ordered a high-level investigation to determine whether administrative negligence contributed to the tragedy.
The hospital administration has also assured the affected families of all possible assistance.
