Dhaka, Sep 04 (V7N) – UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis met with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Thursday at the State Guest House Jamuna, where they discussed Bangladesh’s development priorities, reform agenda, and preparations for the upcoming national elections.
Lewis commended the strong cooperation between the United Nations and the interim government, highlighting that the UN fully supports the general elections scheduled for February. She emphasized that ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process is crucial for Bangladesh’s democratic transformation.
During the talks, both sides explored ways to expand UN support in advancing the government’s ambitious reforms and development initiatives.
The meeting also touched on upcoming international engagements, including the UN General Assembly in New York and preparations for the Rohingya Summit later this month. Both Yunus and Lewis expressed serious concern over declining humanitarian aid for the Rohingya, stressing the urgent need for renewed global solidarity and funding to address the crisis.
Chief Adviser Yunus called for sustained international support, underscoring the importance of addressing the humanitarian funding shortfall and ensuring long-term assistance for Rohingya refugees.
Lewis reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s reform and transformation process, as well as the country’s broader goals of sustainable development and long-term prosperity.
