Pretoria, Jan 19 (V7N) — South Africa is facing severe flooding caused by heavy rains, prompting the National Disaster Management Centre to declare the situation a national disaster, the country’s news agency SA News reported.
The provinces hardest hit include Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and North West. In Limpopo alone, 18 people have died and approximately 1,300 houses have been damaged. Roads, government infrastructure, and public facilities have also sustained significant damage. The Kruger National Park has been temporarily closed due to rising floodwaters.
Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has visited affected areas in Mpumalanga to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
The extreme weather and flooding remain critical in several regions. The government, along with rescue teams and local communities, is working to ensure that aid reaches victims quickly and effectively. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and adhere to safety instructions as the situation develops.
