Washington, Dec 06 (V7N) – World football’s governing body, FIFA, has launched a new annual distinction titled the Peace Award, aimed at honoring individuals who take extraordinary steps to promote peace, prevent conflict, and foster global unity. In its inaugural year, the award has been presented to U.S. President Donald Trump, making him the first-ever recipient.

The announcement was made during the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Although the main draw had not yet begun, the cultural performances and formal recognitions were in full swing when FIFA President Gianni Infantino introduced the new award.

According to FIFA officials, the Peace Award is designed to recognize those who “take exceptional and transformative actions for peace and contribute to uniting people globally.” In selecting President Trump, FIFA cited his claimed mediation efforts in conflict-ridden regions, which the organization says align with the award’s mission of promoting peaceful solutions and humanitarian impact.

Upon receiving the honor, President Trump called it “one of the greatest recognitions” of his life. He referenced several international situations where he claims his involvement helped avert large-scale loss of life.

“We saved millions of lives—look at Congo, where 10 million had died and another 10 million were on track to die very soon,” Trump stated. “In the case of India and Pakistan, we were able to stop a war right before it began.”

Trump also praised FIFA chief Gianni Infantino for his leadership, highlighting the growing momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“Gianni has done an incredible job. This is a beautiful recognition for football—what we call soccer. The world is a safer place now. A year ago, the United States was not in a good position, but today we are the most talked-about country in the world,” he said.

Set to be the largest World Cup in history, the 2026 edition will feature 48 teams for the first time, reflecting football’s expanding global reach. Organizers say this year’s draw ceremony was designed not only to advance preparations for the tournament but also to highlight global unity and cultural harmony.

FIFA officials added that the Peace Award will now be an annual feature, recognizing individuals or groups whose contribution to global peace “goes far beyond traditional boundaries” and inspires cooperation across nations.
