Accra, Sep 02 (V7N) – Ghana’s President John Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaba Saki Torkonu, following a commission investigation that found her guilty of abuse of office.
Torkonu, 61, who became the third woman to hold the position of Chief Justice in Ghana in 2023, had been suspended from her duties pending the investigation. Allegations against her included forgery of judicial documents and misuse of public funds.
A five-member commission, led by a Supreme Court judge, conducted the inquiry. In a statement on Monday, the commission confirmed that the allegations were substantiated and recommended her removal. President Mahama acted on the recommendation, removing Torkonu with immediate effect.
She is the first serving Chief Justice in Ghana to be dismissed following an investigation. It remains unclear whether any criminal charges will be filed.
President Mahama, who assumed office in January, has emphasized a strong stance against corruption in his administration.
