Dec 17, V7N- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Monday that 499 migrants, including 34 women and six children, were rescued off the coast of Libya between December 8 and 14. The organization also confirmed that 29 migrants remain missing.

Sharp Rise in Rescues

In 2024 alone, 21,343 migrants have been rescued and returned to Libya—exceeding last year’s numbers by over 4,000. However, the Central Mediterranean route remains treacherous, with the IOM documenting 635 deaths and 982 missing migrants so far this year.

Libya's Role in Migration

Since the fall of Libya’s regime in 2011, the country has become a critical transit hub for migrants attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.

The ongoing humanitarian crisis underscores the severe risks and dire conditions faced by migrants, as they continue to embark on dangerous, irregular routes in search of safety and opportunity.
