Dec 17, V7N - The United States launched an airstrike on Monday targeting a Huthi command and control facility in Yemen, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM). The site was reportedly used by the rebels to coordinate attacks on US warships and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Ongoing Huthi Offensive
Since November 2023, the Iran-aligned Huthis have carried out repeated strikes on shipping lanes, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid Israel’s military campaign. These attacks have posed a major security threat to international maritime trade through critical routes.
CENTCOM described the targeted facility as a key hub for orchestrating the Huthis' regional operations.
"The strike reflects CENTCOM's ongoing commitment to protect US and coalition personnel, regional partners, and international shipping," the statement said.
Broader Regional Tensions
The Huthi attacks are part of the broader escalation across the Middle East following Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel and Israel's subsequent offensive in Gaza. Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen have cited the Gaza conflict as justification for their attacks.
In response to the escalating threat, the US and allied nations have deployed naval forces to safeguard shipping routes, while also carrying out airstrikes to degrade the Huthis' military capabilities. Despite these efforts, the Huthi offensives have continued, including periodic targeting of US military vessels.
The situation remains a significant challenge to regional stability and global trade, as tensions persist in one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors.
