Rajshahi, Oct 27 (V7N) — A week-long awareness campaign to prevent dengue and chikungunya was inaugurated in Rajshahi on Monday under the theme, “Destroy Aedes Mosquito Breeding Sites, Prevent Dengue and Chikungunya.”
The program, organized by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), Rajshahi branch, began at 10:00 a.m. in front of Rajshahi Medical College. Activities included leafleting, a human chain, and a discussion session aimed at educating the public about mosquito-borne diseases.
Speakers emphasized that dengue and chikungunya can be prevented through public awareness and proactive measures. They advised residents to keep areas around homes and offices free of stagnant water, including flower pots, containers, discarded tires, coconut shells, food wrappers, polythene, and other objects where water can collect. They also urged caution around construction sites, lift shafts, water meter boxes, and other installations to prevent water accumulation.
Participants were advised to change water in containers at least once every three days. In the event of infection, patients should take adequate rest and consume fluids such as saline, coconut water, soups, fruit juices, and rice gruel. They were cautioned to use only paracetamol for fever and avoid other medications unless prescribed. The use of mosquito nets during rest periods, both day and night, was also strongly recommended.
The program was attended by Principal of Rajshahi Medical College, Khandakar Mohammad Faisal Alam, DAB Rajshahi President Dr. Wasim Hossain, General Secretary Dr. Monowar Tariq Sabus, and other medical professionals, who highlighted the importance of sustained community engagement in combating mosquito-borne diseases.
