Rajshahi, June 18 (V7N)– Rajshahi is experiencing a significant resurgence of COVID-19 cases, with health officials reporting an alarming 25 percent infection rate in recent weeks. The first case in the city this year was detected in May, and the infection has since seen a rapid increase, initially affecting mostly doctors but now spreading into the wider community.

According to data from the Rajshahi Medical College Microbiology Department, a total of 42 people tested positive for coronavirus out of 167 samples examined during a 20-day period from May 27 to Saturday, June 16. This indicates that, on average, one in every four samples tested is returning positive. The latest figures for Sunday, June 17, show that out of 31 patients tested, nine were positive for COVID-19.

Despite the rise in positive cases, authorities note that none of the 42 identified patients have required hospital admission, with some opting for primary treatment and self-isolation at home.

Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Head of the Microbiology Department at Rajshahi Medical College, addressed the situation, stating, "Just like influenza, Covid will never be completely cured; it will remain. But there is no alternative to our awareness." He added, "The country has gone through two to three waves of Covid before, and everyone has taken the vaccine. Now, immunity has increased. We have to remember that the mortality rate of Covid is low. So, let's not panic and be aware; let's all use masks."

In response to the escalating situation, Ramech Hospital has activated its preparedness measures for treating coronavirus patients. Authorities confirmed that a separate 25-bed isolation ward has been opened at the hospital, and a dedicated team of doctors and nurses has been formed.

Shankar K Biswas, spokesperson for Ramech Hospital, stated, "Currently, there are no patients infected with Corona admitted to the hospital. Still, a team of doctors and nurses has been formed as a preparation. Everyone should follow hygiene rules. When going out, one should wear a mask, maintain a safe distance, and develop the habit of washing hands frequently. We are prepared."

Rajshahi District Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Mahbuba Khatun assured the public that there is no shortage of oxygen or isolation facilities to combat the virus. She confirmed that instructions have been given to all upazila health complexes in Rajshahi, ensuring their readiness. "We are keeping in touch with everyone. I hope there will be no problem," she added.

Health officials continue to emphasize vigilance and adherence to health guidelines to mitigate the spread of the virus.
