Houston, Jun 24 (V7N)- Portugal national football team produced a dominant performance to defeat Uzbekistan national football team 5-0 in their second Group “K” match of the FIFA World Cup, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice in a memorable victory.

The match kicked off at Houston Stadium in Texas at 11 pm Bangladesh time on Tuesday (June 23), with Portugal wasting no time in asserting their dominance.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in just the sixth minute. The Portuguese captain finished brilliantly after receiving a precise pass from a teammate, beating the Uzbek defense and goalkeeper with a clinical strike.

Portugal doubled their lead through Nuno Mendes from a cleverly worked free-kick. While many expected Ronaldo to take the set-piece, he instead laid the ball off for Mendes, whose low left-footed shot found the back of the net.

Uzbekistan thought they had pulled a goal back when Aziz Ganiev fired home from long range, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review. Officials determined that a foul had been committed on João Cancelo during the build-up.

Portugal continued to dominate after the break. In the 59th minute, a dangerous corner from Bruno Fernandes created confusion inside the Uzbek penalty area, resulting in an unfortunate own goal that extended Portugal’s advantage.

Ronaldo later added his second goal of the night to make it 4-0, further cementing his influence on the match and continuing his remarkable World Cup campaign.

Substitute Rafael Leão completed the scoring in the 87th minute. After receiving a cut-back pass from Nélson Semedo, Leão unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Despite creating a few opportunities of their own, Uzbekistan failed to breach the Portuguese defense as Portugal comfortably secured all three points.

The victory strengthens Portugal’s position in Group “K” ahead of their final group-stage match against Colombia national football team, which is scheduled to kick off on June 28 at 5:30 pm Bangladesh time.
