Vancouver, Jun 22 (V7N) – Egypt produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place in Vancouver on Monday, securing the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

The All Whites made a bright start and took the lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman rose highest to head home from a corner kick. New Zealand maintained their advantage through the first half despite several Egyptian chances, with goalkeeper Max Crocombe denying efforts from Mohamed Salah and Imam Ashour.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, Egypt emerged a transformed side after coach Hossam Hassan made key tactical adjustments during halftime.

The Pharaohs leveled the score in the 58th minute when Mostafa Zico converted a cross from Mohamed Hani. The goal shifted momentum firmly in Egypt's favor.

Mohamed Salah then showcased his quality by combining with Zico in a quick one-two move before firing a low shot into the net to put Egypt ahead 2-1.

Egypt sealed the victory in the 82nd minute when Salah delivered a corner kick that was headed home by substitute Trezeguet, completing a remarkable turnaround and securing a 3-1 win.

The victory marks a historic milestone for Egypt. Having previously appeared in the FIFA World Cup in 1934, 1990 and 2018 without recording a victory, the Pharaohs finally ended their long wait for a World Cup win.

With the three points, Egypt move to four points in Group G and are now in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

Despite the defeat, New Zealand remain in contention for qualification but will likely need a positive result against Belgium in their final group-stage match.

Egypt will face Iran in Seattle on June 26, while New Zealand take on Belgium in Vancouver in the decisive final round of Group G fixtures.
