LONDON, March 25, (V7N) — Mohamed Salah has announced that he will leave Premier League champions Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season, marking the end of a glittering nine-year tenure at Anfield.
The Egyptian forward, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017, has become one of the club's most iconic players, making 435 appearances and scoring 255 goals. He currently ranks third on Liverpool's all-time top scorer list behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
Salah's achievements at Liverpool include winning four Premier League Golden Boots, two League Cups, the 2019 UEFA Champions League, a Club World Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup. He was also a key player in Liverpool's 2019/20 and 2024/25 Premier League title wins.
However, this season has been a challenging one for Salah, with just five Premier League goals compared to the 29 he netted during the previous title-winning campaign. Tensions also flared in December after a public disagreement with manager Arne Slot, which led to Salah being benched for three consecutive matches. Salah later criticized the manager for allegedly throwing him "under the bus," and said he had no relationship with Slot.
In a heartfelt farewell message posted on social media, Salah addressed his supporters, saying: "Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season."
He continued, "I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit."
Salah expressed his gratitude to his teammates, both past and present, as well as to the fans for their unwavering support. "I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home," he added. He concluded with a reference to Liverpool's famous anthem, saying, "Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."
Salah's agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, confirmed the news on X, stating, "We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows."
Liverpool also released a statement, confirming that Salah will "close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield" at the end of the current season.
Salah was forced off during Liverpool's 4-0 win over Galatasaray last week, a match that sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals. He missed Liverpool's 2-1 loss at Brighton due to injury, which has raised concerns about his fitness ahead of the season's final stretch.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher speculated that Salah would aim for a "perfect send-off" by inspiring the team to victory in the upcoming Champions League final. "Knowing Salah's mindset and competitive spirit, he will be setting his sights on the greatest of all possible goodbyes," Carragher said in his column for the Daily Telegraph. "Do not bet against the perfect send-off."
As Salah bids farewell to Liverpool, the club and its fans will undoubtedly remember his contributions as one of the greatest players to ever wear the red shirt.
