Dhaka, Nov 15 (V7N) — Bangladesh cricket is poised to witness a historic moment today at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, as veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim becomes the first Bangladeshi player to reach the prestigious 100-Test milestone.
For nearly two decades, Mushfiqur’s faded Test cap has been a silent witness to his countless struggles and triumphs. Today, that same cap will take on new significance as it becomes part of a landmark achievement in the nation’s cricket history.
Cricketers around the world hold deep emotional connections with their Test caps. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, after losing his own, once said, “That is the most beloved thing of my career. Losing it means losing a part of my soul.” Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara called the Test cap "a legacy,” while India’s Rahul Dravid remarked, “Every stain on this cap, every sweat is a memory of my struggle.”
On November 8, Mushfiqur posted a photo of his well-worn cap on social media, describing it as “a companion of all ups and downs.” It has stayed with him since he received it from Habibul Bashar at Lord’s on May 26, 2005, when he debuted as Bangladesh’s 41st Test cricketer.
Over the years, Mushfiqur has built an extraordinary career. He is Bangladesh’s only triple double-centurion in Tests, with three double hundreds to his name. He also holds the record for the most Test runs by a Bangladeshi cricketer — 6,351 in 99 matches — including 12 centuries and 27 half-centuries.
As he walks onto the Mirpur field today for his 100th Test, Mushfiqur Rahim steps into history. A new chapter will be written — one that celebrates not just the player, but the enduring spirit symbolized by his cherished, once-faded cap.
