Zanjan, May 02 (V7N)- A massive explosion in Iran’s northwestern province of Zanjan has killed 14 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while they were engaged in clearing unexploded ordnance, according to Iran’s state news agency Fars News Agency.
The report said a specialized IRGC unit was conducting operations to identify and neutralize unexploded bombs and weapons left in the area. During the process, a powerful explosive device accidentally detonated, killing 14 personnel on the spot and seriously injuring two others.
Authorities stated that approximately 1,200 hectares of agricultural land in the region had become unsafe due to leftover ordnance, making it difficult for farming activities to resume. The operation was aimed at restoring safety for civilians and enabling agricultural use of the land.
The injured personnel have been admitted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Officials also noted that unexploded ordnance from previous conflicts and military activities continues to pose a serious threat in several parts of Iran, particularly in Zanjan and other border regions, where land clearance has become an ongoing challenge.
