Authorities in the United States have recovered human remains identified as a missing Bangladeshi doctoral student from the University of South Florida, while another student remains unaccounted for, according to law enforcement and diplomatic sources.
Local media outlet WFLA News Channel 8 reported on Friday that the recovered remains belong to Jamil Ahmed Limon, 27, who was pursuing a PhD in Geography, Environment, and Policy at University of South Florida.
Authorities continue to search for Nahida Sultana Brishti, also 27, a chemical engineering student at the same university. Both students were last seen on April 16, university officials confirmed.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has arrested 26-year-old Hisham Abugarbieh, identified as Limon’s roommate, in connection with the case. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Officials from the press wing of the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, D.C., have verified the developments and are closely monitoring the situation while maintaining communication with local authorities.
Earlier on Friday, deputies cordoned off a residential area in Lake Forest, located less than a mile from the university campus, as part of the ongoing investigation. The operation involved SWAT teams, who arrived at approximately 10:36 a.m., and a suspect was taken into custody at around 11:55 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators confirmed that the human remains recovered near the Howard Frankland Bridge have been identified as those of Limon. Forensic examination and additional investigative procedures are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
According to police reports, Limon was last seen at around 9:00 a.m. on April 16 at his residence in Tampa, after which all contact with him ceased. A missing person report was subsequently filed by the sheriff’s office.
Nahida Brishti was last seen at approximately 10:00 a.m. the same day inside the Natural and Environmental Sciences building on campus. University police have also documented her disappearance and are actively involved in search efforts.
Lake Forest is a deed-restricted residential community governed by a homeowners association, where specific rules and covenants regulate residents’ activities. Authorities temporarily restricted access to and from the neighborhood during the operation.
Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case, while efforts to locate the missing student remain ongoing. Further updates are expected as the investigation develops.
