Spain, July 4 (V7N) – The international football community is in mourning following the tragic deaths of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva, who were killed in a car accident in Spain early Thursday morning. Jota was 28 years old; Silva was 26.

The accident reportedly occurred in the Galicia region, though Spanish authorities have yet to release the full details of the crash. Initial investigations suggest their vehicle lost control on a mountainous stretch of road during heavy rainfall. Emergency services responded quickly, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jota had recently celebrated several personal and professional milestones. He was instrumental in helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last season and played a key role in Portugal's UEFA Nations League victory just weeks ago. In June, he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple has three children together.

André Silva, though less well-known internationally, had a promising career playing in Portugal’s second division and was training for a potential transfer to a European club in the upcoming season.

The Portuguese Football Federation released an emotional statement following the news, calling the deaths of the two brothers "irreparable losses for Portuguese football" and vowing to honor their legacies.

The tragedy has also drawn heartfelt tributes from across the sporting world. Cristiano Ronaldo, who had recently shared the pitch with Jota during international duty, expressed his grief in a moving message on social media.

“It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married,” Ronaldo wrote. “To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

Liverpool FC and numerous clubs around Europe have also issued public condolences, with many players expected to wear black armbands in upcoming matches.

Jota's death marks a devastating loss not only for Liverpool and Portugal but for global football, where his talent, humility, and dedication earned him admiration across leagues.
