Gopalganj, July 16, (V7N) – The convoy of central leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP) came under violent attack in Gopalganj on Wednesday afternoon while returning from a rally at the city’s Municipal Park.

The attack occurred at the Chowrangi intersection, where members of the banned Chhatra League and banned Awami League reportedly launched a coordinated assault from both sides, hurling bricks and stones at NCP vehicles and participants.

As chaos unfolded, army personnel swiftly arrived at the scene and attempted to repel the attackers. Simultaneously, police fired blank rounds, rubber bullets, tear gas shells, and sound grenades in efforts to disperse the mob and regain control.

Multiple barricades have been erected by the attackers across key roads in Gopalganj, leaving several NCP leaders and activists trapped in various locations.

Eyewitnesses reported that some vehicles from the NCP convoy managed to escape the ambush and moved toward the Dhaka-Khulna Highway. However, their identities and current status remain unknown, and fears persist that those convoys may also be targeted.

Sources have alleged that the president of the banned Gopalganj District Chhatra League led the attack. In a further escalation of violence, the attackers torched the rally stage, vandalized chairs, and set several pavilions on fire at the Municipal Park venue shortly after the event concluded.

Local residents expressed deep concern over the breakdown of law and order in the district, particularly in light of the ongoing deployment of the military and use of heavy riot-control measures.

As of this report, no official statement has been released by the district administration or the NCP central leadership regarding casualties or arrests. Tension remains high across Gopalganj, with movement in and out of the city severely restricted.
